SHABBONA PARK CARES is a nonprofit community group that is working to raise money to fully renovate our failing playground. Our group started in the Spring of 2011 as concerned parents wanting to better our community and more specifically, the playground at Shabbona Park. We began as a Playground Committee and soon thereafter formed into the Shabbona Park Advisory Council in the efforts and hopes to raise money and awareness on the need for a new and safe playground for this park. Shabbona Park is not only utilized by the surrounding community, but also by many neighboring communites and organizations. We are not only fundraising for the immediate goal of rebuilding our playground, but also to beautify and restore the park. It is also our goal to bring fun and exciting activities to the park each year such as our annual Walk-a-thon with the Summer day camp children, the Open House with Santa, the Valentine's Dance, and the Spring Plant Sale just to name a few.
During the summer of 2011, a team of trained playground safety inspectors surveyed 477 Chicago Park District-owned playgrounds. Under the supervision of Injury Free Chicago, researchers evaluated surfacing, age, equipment maintenance, safety issues and the physical environment. A score below 70% means the playground did not meet national safety standards. Shabbona Park received a score of 57.6%. We FAILED!
Our park is the closest playground for hundreds of children. The equipment is over 28 years old, unsafe and doesn't meet today's standards. Numerous families and preschools are forced to drive or take long walks to other parks due to Shabbona's poor conditions.
Chicago Park District playground renovations are typically funded through 1/3 Aldermanic, 1/3 Community, and 1/3 Park District donations. The cost to renovate Shabbona Park playground is estimated to be $600,000! We will have a better estimate once we start working with our playground engineer provided by the Chicago Park District. Alderman Nick Sposato of the 36th Ward has officially committed $180,000 of available menu funds; we are very grateful for his support!
We need your help! You can donate today to help our community reach its fundraising goal! Friends of the Parks, a nonprofit organization, is the fiscal agent for SHABBONA PARK CARES. This allows us to use their status as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. In short, this means that all donations are tax-deductible! You can donate by clicking the button below or make a check payable to Shabbona Park Cares and mailing it to Shabbona Park Advisory Council, 6935 W. Addison Street, Chicago, IL 60634. THANK YOU!
